Brazilian Guitar Techniques with Julio Lemos Workshop

 

Topics Covered:

  1. Basic Brazilian Guitar Rhythms:

    • Understanding the fundamental grooves of Brazilian music.

    • Exploring Choro, Samba, Maxixe, and Bossa Nova.

    • Developing rhythmic variations inspired by percussion instruments such as the pandeiro and tamborim.

  2. Harmony Applied to Brazilian Guitar:

    • Working with tetrad chords, harmonic fields, and triads.

    • Understanding secondary dominants and the II-V-I cadence.

    • Introduction to the harmonic tree theory developed by Prof. Alencar Soares from Clube do Choro de Brasília.

  3. Playing Along with Recordings:

    • Practical experience in performing with Samba, Bossa Nova, and Choro recordings.

    • Developing musical interaction and real-time adaptation.

  4. The 7-String Guitar Language Applied to the 6-String Guitar:

    • Understanding the traditional 7-string Brazilian guitar approach.

    • Adapting bass lines and harmonic structures for the 6-string guitar.

    • Exploring its role in Samba and Choro.

Workshop Duration:

  • Available in 2-hour, 3-hour, or 4-hour formats (with a 15-minute break).

Choro Essemble Workshop

The Julio Lemos, brazilian music workshop focuses on 6 and 7 string guitar into the esemble and also about all usual choro and samba genres instruments: cavaquinho, mandolin, flute, clarinet, saxophone, pandeiro and tamborim, and how they interact between them.

 

This workshop is a hands-on class where everyone should bring their own instruments to play with the group in the choro circle format, we will play and discuss the musical, historical and interpretive aspects of choro.

 

We will work on composition forms, harmony and choro improvisation, rhythms aspects, on contrasting rhythms patterns as: samba, sambado, sambachoro, maxixe, baião and their variations.

It is recommended, if possible, that the students already play the songs mentioned or that they can do a quick reading of the songs above before the workshop, so they can play and be able to deepen the aspects covered.

We will provide to the students materials of the topics discussed in the workshop at the end of the lesson in a direct link with different scores and teaching materials related to the lesson.
